p o s s e ssed
crippled, blocked out
dread lingers
they're coming back
sloth and lust,
in tandem
arms interlocking: they've gotten me cornered
the boogey man appears this time
as my best friend who became a turncoat
got ya now!
wrath swallowed me
as i saw red.
a mirror crashed, cuts into skin
though i felt it not, when a soul
takes in hell's fire.
i can taste it, i can feel it, i can sense it
this living, breathing flame
that shrivels
my innards.
and though i walked
as if
from far off in a distance:
i could feel the cool touch
of reassurance
from a savior's
cast.
i tried to reach
for that calling -
and my flesh rebelled.
worn, out tired fatigue
stressed up hopeless
desperate forlorn i tried
to kick my flailing legs
in deep other space
found they could not move.
and thus i saw a great battle field
where satan chief of many demons
and angels of light - mocking, taunting
jeering you cannot win
what a fall
as my body fell from the sky
to deep oblivion
though i fought
wept, to
cling
to something real. something good. a friend.
of wild roses, wild days, wild forest
rivers boiling steam hissing
snakes sliding into recesses
of my many open wounds
lust was cast as love,
pride seen as ambition
greed lauded
envy was a norm
gluttony became to be admired
sloth the lucky few
wrath meant justice
that i diluted the real for waste water, polluted
stings, numbs
as the false becomes the real
i covered up my many sores with balm
from flames from hell.
though at times i recognized it not,
blurred lines, foggy mountains, my legs slipped
in what i took was a firm road - turns
out it was just sand quickly crumbles
ropes cut loose instantly
though the business said
guaranteed or money back - but
dead men don't come back
so i crashed
into darkness comforting, familiar
like days of childhood
sent back to my room, a curfew, or locked
in the dark.
till
my open screams
shook the walls, the home became a living
nightmare. and then the door opened.
i woke
from a fever
covered in sweat
and the world was covered once
again by what i can only call as perception.
my heart slowed,
my soul flitted about
in my flesh
restless like, testing freedom,
tasting a prison.
i hugged darkness tightly around
my chest, as if to comfort myself
and found i always have a choice.
then i named my lovely treasures, of pride
greed, lust, envy gluttony wrath and sloth
: you hurt me.
my soul found solace in the naming,
of what had
kept it restless
night in night out day in day out
my flesh simply did not have that capability -
my soul sighed, found
peace when the problem
the enemy was finally given
due recognition
and as for flesh
it was
what
led me to fevered dreams,
and the boogey man who turned out to be real.
